Zachary, also known as Emby (short for Mouth Breather) is another AWOL Unwind that Connor Lassiter met on the way to the Graveyard.
Background[]
When Emby was younger, he was dying from a lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis. His parents decided to buy him a lung from an unwind with asthma, later revealed to be the legendary Humphrey Dunfee, the Admiral's son.
After Emby's mother died, he was taken in by his aunt (his father had died when he was little). However, although his mother had left him some money, his aunt had three children of her own to put through college, so she sent Emby to be unwound.
Unwind[]
Emby is first mentioned in the warehouse as Connor and Risa observe the kids, as a mouth breather that does nothing but read the same comic book over and over. When the Fatigues group the Unwinds and get them into crates, Emby is grouped with Connor, along with Hayden and Diego. He argues with Connor, defending unwinding because of the transplant lung that saved his life.
In the Graveyard, he was a fixture at the pinball machine ever since he arrived. The Admiral took an interest in him because of Emby's lung, which had come from the Admiral's son. The Admiral also wanted to know about Emby's family. Roland announced that the Admiral wanted Emby's thick mop of hair, which Emby suspected might be right.
The Admiral, gathering all the people who had a part of his unwound son, later sent Emby off to the Dunfee ranch where he lived for some time, until Harlan Dunfee's twenty-sixth birthday party.
Emby's disappearance ends up indirectly causing the Graveyard riot, as a search party looking for him found the graves of the Goldens, the Unwinds assume the Admiral killed them himself, and they become angry, resolving to get at the Admiral.
